Born in the village of Kandhulimari, Assam, Hima Das broke the norms to become the first Indian woman sprinter to have bagged gold at the IAAF World U20 Championship, 2018 that was recently held in Finland.
The 18-year-old athlete made a historic win by finishing the 400m race at an impressive 51.46 secs. Especially, the last 10 secs of the race were absolute nail-biting moments when Hima’s strategy of dividing the race into specific frames made her achieve India’s first ever gold in a track event at a global level.
From playing around the muddy rice-growing fields of her hometown to bringing glory to our country with her victorious run, Hima is a true inspiration for every sports aspirant.
Her incredible journey was backed by coach Basanth Singh who always encourages her to extend the boundaries and to have a reminder that the best is yet to come. While all eyes are on Hima Das’ remarkable talent showcase at the Olympics 2020, she remains down to earth stating that she is not after medals and will strive hard to achieve her best timing.
Her tears of joy that she shed when the national anthem played at the podium is ample enough to understand her love for the nation and that economic status is a mere excuse when the goals are limitless.
We at Shyaway, feel proud and privileged to congratulate her record-breaking achievement. Jai Hind!
