How Does Ageing Impact Lingerie Preferences?

As we age, it’s a natural part of life that brings both benefits and challenges. While we can’t control everything, we do have the ability to make choices, such as selecting the lingerie we feel best in. As we age, we tend to choose bras based on the changes in the size and shape of our breasts. Let’s discuss the influence of ageing on bra preferences.

A Study

A study involving 208 women aged 45-65 years was recently conducted to understand the impact of ageing on bra preferences. The variables examined in the study included:

  • Comfort
  • Support (for the breasts)
  • The lift provided by the bra
  • The bra’s ability to stay in place
  • The fit of the bra
  • Its appearance under the outfit
  • The fabric

The women in the study were asked about their feelings regarding ageing, their breast sizes and their choice of bras. They were also requested to explain how ageing had affected their bra and other lingerie preferences.

Results of the Study

Influence of Ageing on Bra Preferences - Study Results

More than 50% of the women in the study stated that they no longer used the bra styles they wore in their 20s. Conversely, the same group agreed that they wouldn’t have worn the bra styles they are currently using when they were in their 20s.

This shows that bra and lingerie preferences certainly change with age. And yes! These preferences vary according to past and present trends, as the outfits women wore in their 20s may differ from what they wear now.

Ageing and Societal Standards

Many older women wish to appear younger because society generally values youthfulness. This influences them to choose lingerie that makes them appear younger. For instance, older women often select bras that provide better support and lift, resulting in “perkier” breasts.

A perkier bust is perceived as more youthful and attractive by societal standards. Conversely, sagging breasts are less preferred, as they can be associated with signs of ageing.

Ageing and Anatomical Changes

Influence of Ageing on Bra Preferences - Anatomical Changes

Many anatomical changes occur in a woman’s body, leading to alterations in breast size and shape. Hormonal changes, caused by pregnancy, childbirth and menopause (in later stages), also affect the shape, volume, density and constitution of the breast tissue. Depending on their stage of life, women tend to switch from nursing bras, which are essential during pregnancy and breastfeeding, respectively.

Choosing Suitable Bras/Lingerie

Influence of Ageing on Bra Preferences - Ageing & Society

Bras/lingerie designed for younger women might not be considered suitable for more mature (older) women due to certain styles, cuts and designs.  However, a “good” bra can enhance a woman’s self-confidence by improving the perception of her body. Consequently, women often choose bras that meet this requirement.

Don’t Let Age Be an Obstacle!

While age does influence bra preferences, it shouldn’t be the only factor in choosing your lingerie. Experiment with different styles, patterns and colours to find what suits you best. Consider the outfit and occasion for which you’ll be wearing the lingerie. Lastly, ensure you know your correct size before purchasing any bra or lingerie and that it fits you perfectly. Age may be a consideration, but it need not be an obstacle in determining your choices!
